Renogy BT-1 App

I just installed a Rover 40A with the BT interface to replace the Tracer 4210 I already had installed. I installed the Renogy BT app on Android.

When I "Add Device" and pick the BT interface ID sometimes it'll connect and show data for a minute or two, other times it'll just popup "device disconnected" and never show anything. I tried killing the app, unplug/plug the BT interface, unplug/plug the Rover, BT on/off, etc. Nothing works to keep the app running and displaying updated data. On an iPad it won't even show a device to connect to.

Is this normal and I should just return everything and switch brands? I wanted to be able to have more info than I was getting out of the serial port on the Tracer. Is there full documentation on the comms protocol for the Rover data port so I could just make my own display?

The signal has a limit of 50ft. Are you within these parameters?

Yes. Installed in the trailer which is beside the house. The app can see the BT device, just won't stay connected to it.

My logging app shows connection timeouts after a few minutes of sending data. It's random, sometimes runs longer, sometimes fails right away.

Is there any documentation for the protocol used on the BT link?

Does it still drop out when your standing beside it? Not in the house?

I guess you have tried that?

Yes, sometimes depending on the walls, they can obstruct the signal.

my ole phone worked better, even from inside @ the kitchen window, controller just inside garage, 30' away
my newer phone I must go outside and get closer, it does not always connect!
mine has BT built inside the controller by the same company, using the Renoy android app.

Only documentation is in the manual:

Same results no matter where the phone is located. It'll just randomly stop receiving updates. Never runs for longer than a couple of minutes. Then I disconnect and reconnect in the Info tab of the app and it might start again for a few minutes.

The manual just says what it does. I was looking for something that details the BT services and characteristics with the format of the data packets I'm seeing.

Logging the traffic to see if the BT-1 is at fault or if the app is. Would be nice if the app showed a "last update time" somewhere on the monitor tab so I can easily tell when it's actually stopped updating.

Question,

You say it's updating? It's not giving you the actual reading of the system it's updating the app?

I mean updating the displayed information with the current CC data. The app periodically queries the CC for the info every 10sec judging by the time stamps in the log. If it fails then the only way you know is to stare at the phone for 30sec to see if anything changes.

In the log I see "GATT CONN TIMEOUT"

If the performance is the same we would recommend you contact technical support for documenting it in the system and perhaps checking to see if it's defective.

Any updates on what happened here? Was it a defective BT-1 Module? My renogy BT app is behaving exactly as described in this thread.

I just gave up using it. I now have a Pi connected into the port on the Rover and generate a Web page I can look at with my phone.

Thanks for the follow up! Too bad it never actually ended up working.. I came back to mine 2 days later without changing anything and it started working properly. Not sure what changed in those two days because I didn't do anything but at least it started working.

I like the way you solved the problem though.

The BT interface works sometimes. It just disconnects way too much for my liking. Now I log a bunch of data to a SQL db so better than what the BT gives anyway.

It was taken down from the store for a few days but has since been uploaded back on.

Are there any plans to update the software? I'm specifically speaking of the iOS app but I assume the question still applies to Android. The app has not been updated in over a year (best I can tell from the app store) and let's be honest, with the number of bad reviews, obviously the app isn't perfect.

I was considering buying a Wanderer Li 30A model and BT-1 adapter as a less expensive option to buying another EXPENSIVE Victron but their software works... WELL.

Thanks,
Richard

I am having these same issues with my BT-1 (Android) and Rover 30 but it sounds like there is still no clear solution. Since I may need to upgrade to a larger CC soon guess I'll look around for one that has better monitoring capability...

I want to correct and clarify my earlier comments on the BT-1 used with my Rover 30...  I was using the BT-1 bluetoothed to a Nexus tablet right next to the Rover with erratic results, slow response, frequent dropping, etc.  It did work occasionally, but poorly.

Today I started using the BT-1 with a Galaxy s9 phone and everything worked great, very fast and responsive.  I believe older bluetooth devices may not perform well with the BT-1 even though they appear to connect.  Hope this helps to clarify things for some others with similar problems.

Here are a couple of tips that have helped me - I use the mobile app to monitor three controllers:

(1) When switching to a new controller, disconnect from the old one first, then perform a new search. Then connect. Might have to do it twice.
(2) Whenever the app seems stuck, sometimes simply reconnecting to the same controller doesn't work. In those cases, temporarily switch to a new controller, then switch back. That usually wakes the app up and it will start monitoring in real time again.

By the way, I have been digging more into the internals, and the BT-1 actually uses Bluetooth LE (low energy). That accounts for the distance sensitivity, but the LE protocols allow for more automated pairing. Works great when it works. Pain in the butt when it doesn't.  ::)
